BrassTacks offers fix to boost online revenue

Designer Alan Jacobson is clearly frustrated with U.S. newspapers in general, especially their online strategies.

"Nobody's doing it right and they're not willing to admit that their products don't work. They've have been at it 15 years and they can't get out of single-digit percentages (of total company revenue)."

…So what would he do with a newspaper web site if he had his way?
  • Change the home page to provide a mere "taste" of all the content, rather than giving it all away on a single page. This will force users to interior pages where larger ads can be served up.
  • Change the way we display advertising. To be effective, advertising needs an uncluttered environment. Ads should be displayed prominently on interior pages, rather than competing with editorial content on the homepage.
  • Change the way we charge, from CPMs to CPCs – like Google.
